I'm in the library right now. It's very dark and teachers are telling very scary stories. There are lots of students from 8 Galli. I promise to tell you another scary story tomorrow. Remember to wear black and orange for house colours.

Congratulations to the students who worked with me on the smartboard for math this morning. I was so happy to see how successful you were.

If you were absent on Thursday morning, you can continue to work on paragraph writing on the classroom computer. Just remind me on Monday morning.

We will be discussing the book (what did you like or dislike about the book, what were the major themes of the book, what were the characters like)

Math - 4.1 and 4.1 worksheets on patterning. We're going to be using toothpicks on Monday...can you guess why?

Make notes on chapter three of your Geography text.

Parents and Students:

If I don't receive an assignment on time, I inform parents with an action plan. An action plan is a letter sent home to be signed by parents acknowledging that either homework or an assignment was not completed. If an assignment is still not handed in, I send another letter home to let parents know. However, I will always take in late assignments and mark them. My goal is to get parents on board to remind students of what is expected of them. Students: the moral here is NEVER GIVE UP...you may be late in doing the work but the work must get done.
For Terry Fox day: please dress for cold weather tomorrow!

And another thing...

Parents, do not be concerned about the list I put out on the weekend regarding who had not completed Geography or postcard assignments. I did receive some assignments on Friday that I failed to put in my bag to mark.

You only need to be concerned if you received a letter today regarding unfinished work.

Web 2.0

We had curriculum night last Tuesday and I was asked to speak to the parent body about the History and Geography curriculum. I talked about the new technology that we have at our school and how we incorporate it into our History/Geography program. It really sounded like I was talking another language and I could tell many of the other teachers were wondering what I was talking about. Blogging? Podcasting?
Last year one of the Grade 8 teachers had his students Podcasting. They took a chapter in the text and summarized it. They had to Podcast the information as one of the historical characters of the time. This was the teachers first attempt at Podcasting so he kept it simple. He was able to use the assignment as an assessment tool for History, Drama and Oral Language.
I plan to share my Blog with my students on Tuesday. This way I will be completely familiar with it by then. Homework and assignments will be posted daily. How wonderful will that be for students who are absent! No more excuses.
